If you're thinking about buying a boat, then you might be thinking about hiring a marine surveyor. After all, you can hire one of these professionals to perform a pre-purchase inspection on the boat that you're thinking about buying. If you're using a loan to purchase the boat, then the lender that is offering your loan could require you to have this type of inspection done. Additionally, you might want to do what you can to be well-informed about the condition of the boat when you purchase it. Even though you may think that a pre-purchase marine survey is a good idea, you might be curious about the different things that will be looked at during this inspection. These are a few examples.

Structural Condition

The first and perhaps most important thing that a marine surveyor will typically look at is the structural condition of the boat that you're interested in buying. They will check to be sure that the boat is still in good, sturdy condition so that it's safe to put in the water. They might check for rust on metal structural components, for example. Many boats are made out of fiberglass, and the fiberglass can sometimes become cracked or gouged. If the boat has ever suffered from some type of impact or if it's old, then structural damage could be a concern. This is why it's a good idea to have a pre-purchase inspection done that includes an inspection of the structural condition of the boat.

Mechanical Components

If you are purchasing a boat with a motor, then you will want to have your motor checked out by a professional to be sure it's in good condition. This is something that the marine surveyor will do while they're inspecting your boat, and they might check the various other mechanical components that make the boat work, too.

Electrical Components

Lastly, the boat that you're thinking about buying will probably have a variety of electrical components. These components control things like the lights, navigation system, stereo system, and more on the boat. A marine surveyor might use electrical testing equipment to check to be sure that the electrical wires are in good condition. They might physically check the lights, navigation system, and other components to make sure that they work like they're supposed to.

This is just a basic list of things that a marine surveyor should check out during a pre-purchase inspection. Consider having one of these inspections done by a marine surveyor before buying a boat so that all of these things and more will be checked out.
